A collection of paintings by the current Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools in London has gone on display in Wrexham.
Selected works by Maurice Cockrill form the latest exhibition at the Oriel Sycharth Gallery on Glyndŵr University’s Wrexham campus.
Professor Cockrill, an honorary fellow of the University, studied at the Wrexham School of Art from 1958-60.
He has exhibited both nationally and internationally, including shows at the Serpentine Gallery, London, and the Kunstmuseum, Dusseldorf. Professor Cockrill’s work is currently in many private and public collections, including the British Museum, Art Council of Great Britain, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and the Royal Academy of Arts.
At Oriel Sycharth, he is showing a collection of oil and acrylic paintings from the last ten years.
Professor Estelle Thompson, Visiting Professor in Fine Art at Glyndŵr University, said: “It’s a great coup for Wrexham to have the work of such a distinguished international artist on show in Wrexham. Maurice studied in the town many years ago and it’s wonderful to see his work return here.”
The exhibition is open Monday to Friday 9am to 4.30pm until Monday 26 April 2010. For more information email
